What's OnThu, 20th June 2019

Elections will be taking place in May 2019 and Waverley Borough Council are hosting an event on 10th September to provide information to anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a district or parish councillor.

The event will be open from 5pm to 8pm; existing councillors will be on hand to share their experiences and provide more information about what is involved in standing for election and becoming a councillor. Service managers will also be on hand to give more information about what services the council provides.

Tom Horwood, Waverley Borough Returning Officer, has said: “I invite anyone interested in standing for election for the borough, town and parish elections in May 2019 to attend the council’s prospective candidates evening on 10 September.

“Councillors play a huge role in representing and leading communities. They make decisions which affect the lives of everyone in the area. The event is designed to give anyone interested in being a councillor a feel for what it is like, including what’s involved and how the election process works.

“May 2019 might seem a long way off, but we are preparing already. Some of the political parties make their candidate selections before the end of the year, so we wanted our event to work for everyone and we consulted the party agents in advance. Individuals can always stand as Independent candidates, of course, and this evening will be helpful to everyone who is interested.”
