Our annual community event to clear litter away from the lanes and ditches of the village returns this year on Saturday 2nd April, meeting at 10am by the Forge on the Green. I am delighted that we have the support of the Bonfire Association, as after a break of two years, the amount of litter that has accumulated is rather challenging.
According to the Tidy Britain Group, soft drink cans are the most commonly dropped item out of cars, followed by sweet wrappers, crisp packets and fast food containers. In Chiddingfold, cans of lager seem to be especially popular! People throwing rubbish out of their cars is a particular problem for us, especially as the street rubbish collection (by Waverley Borough Council) is confined to emptying the litter bins in the village centre. So once a year we make an effort to get down in the ditches and pick it up. The more volunteers turn out the more lanes we can clear. If you are aware of a particularly bad area in your part of the village let me know and we will make sure it is included.
If you can spare some time between 10 and 12pm on the 2nd April please do join us for what is always a fun community event, a chance to meet other villagers and to help in looking after our beautiful village. Please wear suitable clothing, boots and protective gloves – we will supply transport, litter pickers and even refreshments!
