Throughout the year #SurreyPrepared will be thinking about what we can all do to prevent and prepare for life’s emergencies. Each month we are highlighting one action which we encourage everyone to take to help build up resilience. This month the focus is on how to be strong in the face of adverse weather.
ADVERSE WEATHER
Your smartphone can be a brilliant tool to help keep you safe. Download helpful apps, set alerts and ensure you have an ICE contact on your lock screen. Remember to keep your phone charged and consider investing in a portable charger.
The Red Cross Emergency App allows you to receive alerts such as weather warnings for more than one postcode, giving you time to warn vulnerable loved ones who may not live nearby.
The free what3words app can help the emergency services identify your location to within metres, even in the middle of nowhere. It has already helped save lives in the UK.
Clearing snow and ice from the pavement outside your home can help prevent slips and falls. If you can clear the path of a vulnerable neighbour you could also help prevent isolation. The met office has some advice about the snow code.
Check if your property be at risk of flooding in less time than it takes to make a cup of tea. Free flooding alerts are available via text, phone or email.
Driving through floodwater is the highest cause of death during flooding. Please don’t risk it! Just 30cm of flood water can move a family-size car and even less for smaller, lighter cars.
If you become aware of bad weather approaching, take time to ensure any vulnerable neighbours are also aware and can prepare.
